Trusted-Trader Programs & Customs Systems
Authorized Economic Operator
Also known as: AEO
An Authorized Economic Operator is a business certified by its national customs administration, under a globally recognized framework, as compliant and secure in its customs operations, earning simplified procedures and faster clearance in return. Comparable in spirit to the United States trusted-trader program, AEO status is granted after customs reviews a company's compliance record, financial solvency, security measures, and internal controls. Many countries recognize one another's AEO certifications through mutual-recognition arrangements, so status earned in one market can smooth clearance in others, making AEO a valuable credential for international traders.
The international counterpart to CTPAT. Mutual recognition means status in one program can earn treatment in another country — worth pursuing if you ship to several markets, and worth checking which arrangements are actually in force rather than assuming reciprocity.
Where it matters for compliance
