Notify Party

The notify party is the entity named in a bill of lading whom the carrier or its agent must contact when the shipment arrives at destination, so that arrangements for customs clearance and delivery can begin promptly. The notify party is frequently the importer's customs broker or the consignee itself, and listing it correctly prevents the delays and storage charges that arise when a carrier cannot reach the right contact. Although the notify party is alerted about the arrival, being named as such does not by itself confer any title to or right to take delivery of the goods.
