Master Bill of Lading

Also known as: MBL, Master B/L

A master bill of lading is the transport document issued by the actual ocean carrier to the party that booked the space — usually a freight forwarder or consolidator — covering the entire shipment or container as a single contract of carriage. When cargo is consolidated, the master bill represents the carrier-to-forwarder relationship for the whole box, while the individual shippers hold house bills for their portions. Distinguishing master from house bills is essential for understanding who is contractually responsible to whom, and for tracing a shipment through the layered relationships of modern freight forwarding.

You will almost never hold one, and that is the point. On a consolidated shipment your contract is with the forwarder, not the carrier — so when the box is short or damaged, your claim runs against whoever issued your house bill. The master is evidence you have to ask someone else for.
