FAS

Also known as: Free Alongside Ship

Free Alongside Ship is a maritime Incoterm under which the seller delivers the goods by placing them alongside the vessel — on the quay or in a barge — at the named port of shipment, cleared for export, at which point risk and cost pass to the buyer. From there the buyer arranges and pays for loading, ocean freight, insurance, and everything onward. FAS suits bulk and heavy-lift cargo where the buyer's carrier handles the loading operation, and it stops one step short of FOB, under which the seller's responsibility continues until the goods are actually on board.
