Open Top Container

Also known as: Open Top

An open top container is a standard-dimension box with a removable tarpaulin roof instead of a solid one, allowing cargo to be loaded by crane from above and accommodating items too tall for a closed container or awkward to load through end doors. It suits heavy machinery, tall equipment, and bulk materials, with the tarpaulin providing weather protection once the load is secured. Like flat racks, open tops may attract out-of-gauge charges when cargo exceeds the roofline, and proper covering and lashing are essential to protect the goods during ocean transit.

For loads craned in from above or standing proud of the roofline. The tarpaulin is a weather cover, not a seal, and cargo security expectations are different — worth a thought where the goods are attractive.
